SUMMARY:Pocahontas
DESCRIPTION:History comes to life with “The True Story of Pocahontas” at Serenbe Playhouse. Travel to the settlement of Jamestown\, and explore the woods of Virginia through Pocahontas’ eyes. \n \n\n \n\n \n \nWritten by playwright Kara Morrison\, a member of the Waccamaw Siouan tribe\, the play tells the story of Pocahontas from the perspective of a Native American. Pocahontas is played by two different actresses\, both of Native American heritage. The director\, Tara Moses\, is a citizen of the Seminole Nation. \nThe play opens with Pocahontas before she is set to leave her home in Virginia and travel to England with her new husband\, John Rolfe. During the 50 minute performance\, she explores the forests of Virginia for one last time. Several of the cast members interact with the audience\, allowing the kids to be part of the play and keeping their attention despite some of the heavier moments of dialogue. \nThe costumes are simple but transport the audience. Pocahontas switches between two outfits\, a Native American outfit and an English dress. Cast members portray animals and wear headpieces to become a hare\, a deer\, a bird and a fish. Female gossips wear fancy hats and fan themselves to show we’re in England. Costume designer\, Asa Benally\, is of the Cherokee and Navajo Nations. \nIf your child is expecting to see Disney’s “Pocahontas\,” she may be disappointed. But this play is an excellent way to teach her about the real Pocahontas\, and she may be intrigued to know the Narrator and Mother\, Irene Bedard\, voiced Pocahontas in the Disney movie. \nBefore the show\, kids can play stickball\, a game the characters compete in during the play while the audience cheers. After the show\, you can meet the cast and get their autographs\, and an autograph page is provided at the back of the program. \n“The True Story of Pocahontas” is an entertaining piece of history for kids and a touching reminder to adults that while you can’t go home again\, you can remember where you come from. \n-Emily Webb \nKnow Before You Go: \n\nThe play is outdoors\, so check the weather. They have bug spray at the concession stand\, but you may want to bring your own.\nWear comfortable shoes\, as you have to walk down a slight hill from parking to the set.\nPorta potties are available near the parking lot if you or your child needs to use the restroom.\n\nJune 13-Aug. 4. See website for showtimes.

SUMMARY:Review: Peter Pan at Serenbe Playhouse
DESCRIPTION:New Songs\, Sword Fights and Lots of Fun with “Peter Pan” \n \n\n \n\n \n \n“Peter Pan” at Serenbe Playhouse will whisk you away to Neverland for a most splendid (and humor-filled) hour with Peter Pan\, Smee\, Captain Hook and Tinkerbell in this timeless classic. \nWe were immediately transported to this magical place by the outdoor amphitheater’s impeccable attention to detail. As you walk up to the amphitheater\, you‘ll see the Jolly Roger\, and then Tinkerbell appears via a zip line to begin the story. \nThis version of Sir J.M. Barrie’s beloved story is unique. The actors sing new songs live to the accompaniment of recorded music\, and there is a different take on the plot. But in case you were wondering: Yes\, Peter Pan and Captain Hook do sword fight! \nWhat my family liked the best was that the actors came down to the front area to interact with the audience from time to time\, which is great for keeping a child’s attention. When Tinkerbell sprinkled her fairy dust on us\, one of my 7-year-old twins exclaimed\, “Glitter!” \nThe actors are members of the playhouse’s apprentice program\, and they are talented recent college graduates who will work in every production at Serenbe for one year. The play was directed by Michael Alvarez\, who has directed productions all over the world. \nThe drive from North Atlanta takes 55 minutes\, but it’s well worth it – people from all over the metro area make the drive. I sat next to a sweet mother from Smyrna who had already made the trip five times to see some of the other productions. \nMy children\, an 11-year-old and the twins\, loved this play and they have talked about it incessantly since our visit. It was a wonderful way to spend a summer day! \nSomething Extra: After the show\, you can take part in a Peter Pan scavenger hunt (the clues are on the playhouse’s social media and program). Allow extra time if you wish to do this. \nWhat to Take: Rain gear (rain insurance extra)\, sunscreen\, bug spray\, a camera and money for concessions. Portable potties are available. Kids can sit up front on the blankets provided\, and adults sit on wooden benches. \n– Cindy Moss \nAfter defeating Captain Hook and taking over his ship\, join Peter deep in the forests of Neverland where he lives with his band of Lost Boys. Through Aug. 26. Thurs.-Sun. See serenbeplayhouse.com for showtimes. $20 and up; ages 3-12\, $13 and up; ages 2 and younger\, free. Prices vary by show; rain insurance\, extra.
